If you’re a fan of the original Hydro Thunder games, you should feel right at home with this title. To control the boat, simply tilt the device left or right. As long as you have enough nitro fuel, you can keep them going for quite a while. To turn on your afterburners (or whatever they’re called on a boat), there is a little icon at the bottom right corner of the screen (just below the shift lever) that you can tap to turn them on or off.To jump while you’re boat is moving, you simply swipe upwards on the screen (anywhere on the screen), and the boat hops up out of the water a little bit.I didn’t have to slow down at all within the level.

In the one trial level, I found that leaving the throttle fully open seemed to work fine throughout. You swipe the shift lever upwards to speed up, swipe it downwards to slow down.

This is not a port of an existing iPhone or Android app this is a completely original game made strictly for WP7.įor purposes of this review, I’ve only played the trial version of the game.

Hydro Thunder itself should be a fairly well-known franchise at this point, having made its non-arcade debut on the Sega Dreamcast and then released in various forms for the N64, Gamecube, Playstation, PS2 and Xbox 360.Īs far as I can tell (presumably since the game is owned and distributed by Microsoft), this game is a Windows Phone exclusive. The game is Hydro Thunder Go, a fast-paced racing game that puts you in the driver’s seat of a speedboat instead of the traditional racecar. Some links in the article may not be viewable as you are using an AdBlocker. So the lasting value is quite good, but those disappointing frame rate issues may prevent you from wanting to play the game over and over again. After that, you can compete with your Xbox Live friends in the Time Attack races (competing for the fastest time on all the tracks) and you can play the Hydro Blaze mode, where you try to use boost as long as possible on the course without falling off. It will probably take you about two hours to complete the main part of the game (that is, unlocking all of the levels and boats). And those pixelated graphics don’t please anyone either. It definitely feels like you’re playing at lower than 30 fps all the time. Also, the frame rate is never truly smooth the entire time you’re playing. Whenever there’s a lot going on in the screen (like two opponent boats driving next to you), the frame rate slows down significantly, which can seriously ruin a race. The graphics are pixelated, and more importantly, the frame rate consistantly staggers. The sound is pretty good in the game, but the visuals are miserable. Unfortunately, the visuals ruin the experience. It also has fantastic controls and engaging gameplay elements that keep you well interested. The game has an incredible mix of different levels, hidden shortcuts, and different boats to race. If the visuals were better, the game would definitely receive a 5/5 for gameplay. The gameplay is chaotic, exciting, action-orientated, and fun! However, once that frame rate starts to slow down, the game becomes frustrating, especially when the frame rate causes you to miss a boost bottle or mess up just before the finish line. The lasting value is just slightly better than average. Overall Score: 3/5Įven though the gameplay is extremely impressive, Hydro Thunder GO takes a major overall hit because of its disappointing visuals, which have consistent frame rate issues that severely impact the gameplay. Hydro Thunder GO is a new WP7 exclusive game where you race boats through chaotic waters while catching air and boost.
